This summer is especially hot, and the high temperatures make people feel like they’re burning up all over. Many people chug iced drinks and hide in air-conditioned rooms to cool down quickly. Although these methods can help lower body temperature, they can also slow down the body’s response to heat and make people eat more unconsciously. It’s like treating the body like a refrigerator – storing too much heat can lead to obesity.
According to Chinese medicine doctor Sheng-Pu Lee, obesity is a common problem worldwide, especially in places where air conditioning and refrigerators are prevalent. This is mainly due to the fact that the people in these areas are relatively wealthy and have a richer diet. Drinking ice water has become a cultural habit for Americans – they often order a glass of ice water at restaurants, and even popular sodas are served cold. In fact, almost all beverages in the fridge contain sugar because it makes them taste better. Drinking cold beverages is the same as consuming more sugar.
While iced drinks can be refreshing, Dr. Sheng-Pu Lee points out that they are a trap that leads to obesity. Normally, the heat in food is immediately released from the stomach and intestines after eating. As the heat enters the brain through the bloodstream, the brain senses when the chemical molecules of nutrients have been consumed too much, which triggers a feeling of fullness and stops people from eating more.
Drinking cold beverages can cause a drop in the temperature inside the stomach, which slows down the release of heat in the body, decreases blood flow, and delays the brain’s response to the intake of nutrients and calories. When spending long periods in air-conditioned rooms, even if the body has enough calories, people tend to feel like they haven’t eaten enough and may unknowingly consume excess calories.
As the body accumulates too many calories, feeling the release of heat in a non-air-conditioned environment can be uncomfortable and people may continue to seek cool air or drink cold beverages, which then lowers body temperature and creates a false sense of hunger, leading to a vicious cycle. Dr. Sheng-Pu Lee pointed out that consuming excessive calories through drinking cold beverages and air-conditioning can increase the burden on the liver, cause congestion in the intestines, and decrease blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain, causing drowsiness and promoting obesity.
Dr. Sheng-Pu Lee believes that to lose weight, one must first break the habit of treating the body like a refrigerator by avoiding cold drinks and minimizing air conditioning use. The body needs to naturally dissipate heat to burn accumulated fat and calories. Engaging in healthy activities like outdoor cycling can also aid in weight loss. While cycling outdoors, it is important to avoid cold drinks and instead drink warm water when thirsty. This habit will help one achieve weight loss goals quickly.
Some people take weight-loss drugs to achieve fast weight loss, but Dr. Sheng-Pu Lee said that weight-loss drugs can easily damage the liver, and even if weight loss is achieved successfully, the body may experience problems such as anemia and tissue degeneration. He pointed out that if an obese person reduces their food intake and finds themselves feeling weak, trembling, and panicked, it indicates that their liver is already experiencing problems. At this time, in addition to weight loss, they should also pay attention to liver protection, such as learning to use liver-tonifying pills to help the liver metabolize and burn stored fat. This way, even if food intake is reduced, there will still be enough energy to exercise. During exercise, you can eat a banana because bananas have a lot of fiber, which can prevent friction caused by an empty stomach.
Dr. Sheng-Pu Lee emphasizes the importance of adjusting body temperature and protecting the liver to promote healthy weight loss. Although burning fat during weight loss can be uncomfortable and cause restlessness, breaking the habit of consuming cold drinks and not exercising is crucial for success. Following the correct methods will lead to success in weight loss and help maintain a healthy body.
