If you have dark circles under your eyes, it is easy to give people the impression that you love to play and don’t sleep, and that you don’t have the energy to work, but often it is the “after-effects” of a nose allergy. A freshman, who had allergic rhinitis since childhood, was unable to find a job because of it. One interviewer kindly reminded him that it was important to take the interview seriously and not to overdo it, making him mentally ill.
Many patients who suffer from allergic rhinitis have been to various medical institutions. However, most doctors tell patients that nasal allergies cannot be eradicated and that they usually get better when they get older, or they can use surgical treatment to remove the polyps that swell up due to nasal allergies. However, Chinese medicine has a very different view. Dr. Sheng-Pu Lee, the director of Sheng-Pu Chinese Medicine Clinic, said that allergy is a basic reaction of the nose, and since the nose dissipates 35% of the body’s heat and is close to the brain, which is the most sensitive part of the nerves, it is still easy to relapse if polyps are removed.
Dr. Sheng-Pu Lee further explained that the nose is the heat dissipation organ of the lungs and large intestine, and nasal polyps are the thermostat of the body. When the temperature of the lungs drops, nasal polyps swell, and the polyps shrink the heat dissipating air holes so that the body does not inhale too much cold air and become ill. However, people often use their mouths to inhale instead of their noses because they can’t breathe smoothly due to nasal congestion, so the temperature of the lungs can’t warm up, and as a result, the nasal polyps continue to swell, causing the congestion to worsen.
If people can understand that their allergies are caused by qi deficiency and that their body constitution is deficient in yang qi, they can pay more attention to their diet. Dr. Sheng-Pu Lee recommends avoiding cold substances such as pears, watermelon and cold drinks, and eating more leafy vegetables, rice and noodles, which increase the amount of colonic waste (high fiber). In terms of Chinese medicine, choose herbs that can nourish the qi. Dried ginger and ginger can increase the heat of the stomach and large intestine; astragalus and American ginseng can replenish the blood qi of the lungs and large intestine.
It is worth noting that it is important to activate the body mechanism to protect oneself. Dr. Sheng-Pu Lee mentioned that meditation, exercise, and the consumption of a rough diet can significantly improve allergic rhinitis. When people sit in meditation, the body’s nerve mechanism is calm, cells are easily recharged, and breathing is slowed down, resulting in slower heat dissipation in the lungs and lower oxygen demand, which in turn leads to a decrease in sensitivity and a gradual reduction in allergies. Moreover, if the nerve cells have enough rest and nutrients, they can recover early even if they are sick.
